Built based on the 306 S16, the Peugeot 306 Maxi boasts an engine which was designed in line with the ones in the 406 STW touring car. However, there were no maximum rev rules applied to the 306 Maxi and Peugeot Sport managed to rev the engine beyond 10000 rpm, which almost reaching the same power output of a WRC rally car's engine.

The 306 Maxi made its debut in 1995 Rallye Alsace-Vogues and eventually won the FIA 2-Litre World Rally Cup Constructor champion in the same year.
