After the cancellation of Group B rally by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in 1987, many of the remaining Group B cars found their new home in different disciplines of motorsport such as rallycross and hillclimb. In the case of Peugeot, they used much of their experience to repurpose their Peugeot 205 T16 for participation in Paris-Dakar Rally and Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.

In the same year, Ari Vatanen represented Peugeot in Pikes Peak Hillclimb with the 205 T16. However, the victory was claimed by Walter Röhrl with the time of 10:47.85 in an Audi quattro S1 Pikes Peak. This defeat also inspired the creation of Peugeot 405 T16 Pikes Peak by Peugeot which eventually dominated Pikes Peak in 1988 and 1989.
