In 1979, Opel collaborated with German tuner Irmscher and Cosworth in UK to create the Opel Manta 400. Irmscher designed the exterior and interior of the Manta 400. Cosworth built a 2.4-litre engine with a 2.0-litre engine block with an overbore and larger pistons, and a crankshaft from the 2.3-litre diesel engine of CIH spec. The engine was mounted with the 16-valve head to provide massive output, and the opportunity to make several tune-ups for the rally drivers.

245 examples of the Opel Manta 400 were built before it was eventually was homologated into Group B, on 1st March 1983 by FISA (before being known as FIA).
