Designed by Bertone and announced in 1971, the Lancia Stratos HF was the replacement to Lancia Fulvia HF for Lancia's rally program. The prototype version of Stratos had three different version of engines in its early development phase: the Lancia Fulvia engine, the Lancia Beta engine and Ferrari's mid-mounted Dino V6 which eventually became Lancia's engine of choice.

The Stratos debuted in 1974 World Rally Championship after 500 Stratos were produced in a year before. Driven by Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård, the Stratos has won 1974, 1975 and 1976 WRC championship title. It has also claimed victories in 1975, 1976 and 1977's Monte Carlo Rally. The Stratos was proven to be one of the most successful rally car in 1970s.

Colin McRae DiRT[]

“The Lancia Stratos is a bit of a dinosaur. It had groundbreaking power and torque in its day, but it's simply too noisy and brutal for the demands of modern rally. It struggles on gravel, but it's still got what it takes on tarmac. Power and speed.”
Travis Pastrana
