The Herbst Truggy "Land Shark" (otherwise known as El Tiburón) was originally built in 1995, by race car builder Mike Smith, for Jerry Herbst of the Terrible Herbst gas station chain. It was designed to be simpler and stronger than the other cars in its class; it uses a solid rear axle, as a trophy truck would, and is kitted out with massive 39-inch tyres. It is powered by a 454ci Ford V8 coupled to a Turbo 400 transmission. Its competition career has seen it amass around forty desert-racing victories[1].
