In their effort for 1993's World Rally Championship season, Ford developed Ford Escort RS Cosworth based on the chassis and mechanicals of the Ford Sierra Cosworth to accommodate the larger Cosworth engine and transmission, fitted with the body panels found from the standard Mk.V Escort. Designed under the guidance of Ford's SVO department, the styling was carried out during 1989, a year before the standard Escort was launched, by MGA Developments in Coventry. Changes were also made to its engine management system and a new Garrett turbocharger was fitted. Permanent four wheel drive with a 34/66% front/rear split came courtesy of an uprated five speed gearbox as used in the Sierra Cosworth.
Despite it never had won any of the drivers or constructors championship title, the Escort RS Cosworth still proved itself to be one of the most solid performing rally cars in Group A era with 10 WRC rally wins from 1993 to 1997, with 5 of its victories gained during 1993 by François Delecour, Miki Biasion and Franco Cunico. The Escort RS Cosworth was eventually retired from Ford's works team after the final round of 1998's WRC season at Great Britain and was succeeded by Ford Focus WRC in the following year.
